Hearty Old Fashioned Grandma Style Pea Soup
Got a request for my pea soup recipe, gonna make it tomorrow, but here is my recipe!
You will need:
- 1 package 16 ounces dried green split peas
- 1 meaty ham bone
- 2 bay leaf
- 1 cup chopped carrot
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 1 cup celery chopped
- 5 garlic cloves chopped
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 2 Yukon Gold potatoes, unpeeled, cubed
- 2 sprigs thyme
- 3 qts of water
Directions:
- Rinse the peas well in cold water.
- In a large pot or Dutch oven add the olive oil and sauté the onion, garlic, celery, carrots, potatoes with 1 tsp salt and pepper for 10 minutes.
- Add the peas, ham bone, bay leaves thyme and 3 quarts of water. Bring this to a boil and then lower the heat to a simmer and allow this to simmer covered for 2 hours until the peas are done.
- Remove the ham bone, thyme and bay leaves. Chop the ham off the none and add back to soup.
- Taste for salt and pepper.
